A Smart Charging Event, also known as a Peak Demand event, occurs when Duquesne Light Company designates specific hours that are peak periods of high energy demand on the electricity grid throughout the summer, such as hot afternoons. These events are opportunities to shift and reduce your electricity consumption to help support your community and the electricity grid.
Smart Charging Events will be called in the summer months from June to September, and will typically occur between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.
To remain eligible for the Smart Charging Rewards Program, you must:
- Participate in at least 50% of the Peak Demand Events each month. This means your vehicle should be plugged in but not charging during the event(s)
- Charge your EV for at least 15 minutes total during that same month
If you are enrolled in the Smart Charging Rewards Program, you can follow the WeaveGrid generated schedule as it will account for Smart Charging Events.
